Australian Red Cross is currently calling for volunteers for the 2002 Red Cross-Herald
Sun Murray Marathon.
The Red Cross-Herald Sun Murray Marathon
Today, the Marathon is known as the longest, most gruelling canoe race in the world and we are seeking
extra voluntary hands to assist in the smooth running of the event and the co-ordination of, potentially,
5000 people.
40 volunteers are needed for the team, so if you're interested or know of someone who would like
to be involved in this logistical exercise - there are two areas you can be involved in: The Camp
Management Team also known as the RED SHIRTS or The Traffic Management Team - the BLUE SHIRTS.
DATES: 26th December 2002 - 1st January 2003
(N.Y.E. is spent in Swan Hill)
Below is a list of dates, race details for paddlers and campsite allocations.
Transport
This is provided by the Australian Red Cross, Victoria. The two teams will be transported via mini
buses to Yarrawonga, along the Murray and back to Melbourne.
Camping
You will need to supply this for yourself - items include a tent, sleeping bag etc.

There is catering supplied for the 5-day event, this will approximately cost $90 for the full five days
and will include breakfast, lunch & dinner.

The Camp Management Team (CMT or Red Shirts) was established to co-ordinate all campsites officially
recognised by the Marathon Committee.
They will manage the access and egress points at the official campsites and make provision for the
orderly operation of the campsites at all times. In an emergency they will make the necessary
arrangements to provide for the safe departure of all personnel.
An important additional objective however is to ensure that the Red Shirts enjoy their time with
each other, the Marathon Committee, volunteers, canoeists and land crews.
The following is an overview of the various roles that you as a Red Shirt Camp Marshal will fulfil
during the Murray Marathon. It is important that we work together as a team to complete all of the
tasks to a high standard of proficiency and to have a lot of fun in the process. By maintaining high
standards we will ensure that the basic creature comforts are available to participants and their support
teams at all times. It goes without saying that if we achieve this we will make a major contribution to
the overall success of the marathon.
- Gate administration - Front gate
- Campsite administration
- Lost property
- Hygiene
- Communications
- Performing under pressure
- Demonstrating leadership
- Maintaining self-discipline
- Contributing to effective teamwork
- Performing with confidence with the support of the OIC, 2IC and Camp Marshals

The following table out lines what dates the Red Shirts are required to work and where the campsites
are on those particular dates. Ideally the whole team should be at Yarrawonga on the 26th December.
